Let's Talk PEE
What a strange way to start off a article, but there is a reason behind this and it is not what
you think.
It has to do with a lesson I have learned just in the past few weeks that must pass on to my readers. What I am
getting at every time before you go to the lake it would not hurt to put on what I call Micky Mouse Ears on your
motor and with the garden hose on run fresh water for at least five minutes with the motor running and ensure that
the motor is peeing. This will let you know that your water pump is working.
I have a 150 Merc and it takes mine a few seconds before it starting to peeing. DO NOT DO THIS WITH OUT FRESH
COOL WATER RUNNING INTO YOUR MOTOR.
I like to do this before I go to the lake and the return from the lake and this is the
reason....stop and think when you are loading your boat to bring it back home ever think about how you goose
the engine to get it up and all the sand/dirt/mud/scum it stirs up at the loading spot how much of all that
gets sucked up into your motor. Good reason to flush it as soon as you get home while
your cleaning up that high dollar play toy you want to keep it in good running order.
O.K. now I saved you some bucks and I will tell you what led to this article.
I took my Bass Cat to my Son's in Nashville and was going to fish Old Hickory that I had heard so much about. Got
up there on a Wednesday afternoon and my Son was going to be off on Thursday so both of us were going to be able to
fish together.
Did not give the water pump a second thought seeing I just got it out of the shop and had the go over the entire
boat to ensure it was ready to hit the water. We fished all day with not even a bite the only thing we got was both
of us got a bad case of sunburn. We went home and both of us were tired but went down to the bank to see what folks
were doing and we saw a guy tearing the bass up on a small lure bank fishing.
The next morning my Son had to go to work and I lit out to try again and by noon I called it quits. Loaded the boat
and was headed back to the house and passed my Son and we both met at the house. I explained I needed to flush the
motor out and we hook the hose up and ...... no pee. I shut it down and tried again still no pee, took the boat to
the lake and backed it into the lake deep enough where it was sure enough going to pee and still nothing. That told
me right then the WATER PUMP was not working. This Friday afternoon and chances on getting someone to look at it on
Saturday was slim to none.
My Son had to go into work Saturday morning and both of us started calling around to see if we could get the
boat into a boat shop, not to mention the weekend before the fourth of July. When My Son got home the first place
he called (The Boat Locker) they said bring it over. We flew and sure enough it was the Water pump and the housing
were both burnt up.
If we had been in the middle of the lake we would have locked the engine up.
The other problem was they did not have part of the housing and I would have to race to Franklin Tn to get the
other kit and get back before the Boat Locker closed at 4 pm and was looking at 1:30 pm now. I made it and what had happened was the motor had sucked up some green slim and clogged the
pump. I am sure glad I did not try to keep on running the motor.
It Cost me $310.00 but could have cost me a brand new MOTOR.
