Bass Fishing - Alabama Rig: "Be Careful"

Alabama Rig or Umbrella Rig - Designed to Catch Several Bass Fish With One CastThis is not a new system on catching fish. It has been hidden for years and has just now been let out of the bag. Paul Ellias won $100,000 at Lake Guntersville.

Another name that a lot of anglers might call it is a Umbrella Rig.

BassProShop has it under the name of "The Swarm" Castable Umbrella Rig and it comes in 4 colors. See Below

New England saltwater anglers have been using it for decades, fishing for bass and bluefish...trolling.

There are anglers stating that they have come up with 19 pounds with just one cast. It is not a sure thing for you, but given the right time and place it could very well happen.

Here Are 6 Tips from BassMasters:

  1. Go heavy. Eighty - or even 100 pound test braid (Power Pro) line and a big flipping rod are recommended since these rigs are heavy and can be challenging to cast. Plus, they're not cheap, retailing at $20 or more. You want stout gear that will straighten hooks and get your investment back to the boat.
  2. Use Wire. Go heavy on the rod and line, but stick to wire hooks on your baits. You want them to straighten out under pressure from heavy rod and line, but still stand up to a fish...or Two...or Five.
  3. Keep it tight. Experts say keeping the baits in a tight configuration is the way to more bites, but don't position them so close they tangle.
  4. Anglers this is the most important one of all. Check the laws. As this article goes to press, the Alabama Rig appears to be illegal in several states - Maybe yours! Review your regulations carefully  and call local authorites if you have questions. If you're atournament angler, you'll want to check the competition rules, they can change.
  5. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Stick with lures the same size and basic design when fishing The Alabama Rig. What you are doing is trying to mimic a school of whatever and a easy meal for MR. Basshog.
  6. EXPERIMENT. The technique is new to the fishing world, and anglers are just now starting to figure ways to use it. Everyone who knows Basshogfishing knows I will play with this a little and might come up with a idea that works better. I think I was headed in the right direction when I thought up of using three Flukes tied on the same line trying to mimic a school of shad.

BassMasters listed these states where it would currently be in violation of state regulation to use this rig:

IOWA, MINNESOTA, TENNESSEE and perhaps your state.

That is why I say call your Widlife officer for your state even if it is on the list above and get the scoop from the horse's mouth. Rules change quickly sometimes and it may be legal for your state
