Lake Baccarac Mexico
I know that I am always talking about going to Mexico to fish for the bass hogs. Maybe it
is a dream or maybe it is in the future; either way this has got to be a Fishermen's Paradise. I'm not the only
person who thinks the lake and the surrounding mountains are majestic.
Terry Hollan has constructed a lodge overlooking this beautiful lake that can
house up to 32 Anglers. The Lake Baccarac Lodge is also known as Lake Baccarac Big Bass Lodge for a proven
reason.
Lake Baccarac Mexico has proven its' bass by producing double digits the past few years and I am
not talking one or two a year. It would be more like one or two a day. Lake Baccarac is a premier trophy bass
lake of Mexico. The statistics don't lie.
The impoundment is by an old gold mining town of Bacubirito, Mexico and it is filled with the
mother load of double digit bass. This lake does not have the numbers that you will read about at like El Salto
and other lakes in Mexico, but when you do nail one, you can count on it being the Double Digit.
Back in 2001 - 2002, Lake Baccarac logged in 245 bass weighting more than 8 pounds, 98 were over
10 pounds, 22 were over 12 pounds, 17 over 13, 10 over 14, 4 over 15, and 2 were over 16 pounds.
Now stop and think these figures are from 2001-2002 and the fish were returned to the lake. I
just wonder how big those fish are now, see what I am saying.
Lake Baccarac has flooded timber and if you are like me, that is a red flag on where to
look for them. I live to fish timber and I can not recall a time that I have fished timber that I have not
caught a hog.
Check out some of the stories that come out of the Baccarac lake where 5/0 hooks get straighten
out, Hooks on spinnerbaits get broke,
and Braided line getting broke. Hey sounds like a place for me! I would love that kind of
fight.
Lake Baccarac is fed by the Sinaloa River and when she is full has about 35,000 acres. When
she is down, it still has about 28,000 acres at its' lowest.
The main forage is the tilapia, so find them and you will find the bass.
December thru March they say is the time for crankbaits (black and silver/green and pearl).
January is a prime month for throwing topwater at Baccarac and that is the month I want to hit.
Can you even fathom a 16 pound bass explodin on a topwater bait? The list of baits that they
tell you to bring are: Rebel Pop R, Strike King Spit'n kings, Heddon Zara Spooks with the black back and silver
sides.
March is where the soft plastic start to play in the action like sinkos, lizards, and still some
white spinnerbaits.
The manager says only about 20 boats are on the lake during the prime season and if it is like
the other lakes I fish, you would not even see any of the other boats. The seasoned guides will get you to the
places where you will get a shot at some true bass hogs.
The lodge provides Air-Conditioned rooms, hot and cold running water, purified water and three
meals a day. The boats provided by the lodge are 18 foot Crestliners with 60 hp motors, with
front and rear trolling motors and depth finders.
